EPDM Playground Installation Guide: 5 Steps to Prevent Granule Shedding & Cracking
Professional insights from MOUNTSHIP — Global EPDM manufacturer with 23+ years in rubber surfacing, serving 10+ countries.
Step 1: Inspect & Prepare the Sub-Base (Concrete/Asphalt)
Key Points: Sub-base must be level, concrete strength ≥ C25, surface free of oil and loose dust; cracks shall be repaired with epoxy mortar; new concrete must cure for ≥28 days.
Step 2: Use High-Adhesion PU Binder
Key Points: Avoid non-compliant binders to prevent safety hazards and insufficient adhesion; recommended MOUNTSHIP A200 and A950 series, offering >2.0 MPa adhesion to EPDM and near-zero odor after curing.
Mix Ratio: 5.5:1 to 6:1 (EPDM : binder by weight); slightly increase binder if temperature <15°C.
Mixing: Use forced-action mixer for ≥3 minutes to ensure full granule encapsulation.
Step 3: Control Installation Environment: Temperature & Humidity
Recommended conditions: temperature 15–35°C, humidity 30–70% RH.
Step 4: Layered Pouring & Standardized Compaction
Application technique:Rough-level with a rake, rest 5–10 min for binder penetration, level with a paving machine; trowel-finish the surface, then re-compact with the paving machine.
Note: Do not step on uncured surface.
Step 5: Proper Curing & Final Inspection
Surface dry: 2–4 hours (lightly touchable);
Light use: 24 hours (walking only);
Full cure: 7 days (ready for load-bearing, cleaning, and acceptance inspection).
